Ian made his name playing as both a defender and centre forward for Oldham Athletic, although some would say he was more famous for his dodgy 80′s mullet haircut!. One of the games great characters, the quick witted scouser started his career at his home town club Everton, and was given his debut by Toffees Legend Howard Kendall. Kendall was the first of the many top British Managers Ian had the pleasure of working with, although he’s not so sure if the Managers quite felt the same way about him!
In a career spanning over 20 years he must have done something right as he was signed by the likes of Joe Royle, John Lyall, Martin O’Neill, Steve McMahon and Sam Alladyce, with not one of them managing to escape a typical Ian dressing down usually reserved for fellow pros, not the boss!
After 4 years at Everton he signed for Oldham Ahtletic for £200,000 and scored nearly 50 goals in around 200 appearances before joining Ipswich Town in 1993 for £750,000. At Portman Road he scored 38 times in just over 90 appearances, before being sold to Martin O’Neill’s Leicester City for £800,000 in 1996. He played as both a striker and centre back for The Foxes for 4 seasons becoming a real crowd favourite by scoring a 25 minute hatrick against local rivals Derby County and also notching in the UEFA Cup away match at Athletico Madrid. Ian was part of probably the greatest ever Leicester Ciy team of all time, and they hit the headlines both on and off the pitch including the infamous Le Manga trip which saw all the squad flown home in shame following Stan Collymores ‘inapropriate’ use of a fire extinguisher in the piano bar at the ‘upmarket’ resort!
Ian was then signed by Big Sam Alladyce on a free transfer for Bolton Wanderers and played an instrumental role in helping the Trotters gain promotion back to the Premiership. A loan move to Steve McMahons Blackpool was made permanent and Ian signed off his football career in the LDV Final victory at The Millenium Stadium in 2002.
Ian is now hoping to establish himself as one of the best newcomers to the after dinner circuit with his unique no holds barred, frankly honest and hilarious stories based predominately around the off field activities of his former team mates and managers.
