Harold ‘Dickie’ Bird OBE
Considered to be one of the best umpires ever in the game of cricket.
He was a batsman for 8 years with both Yorkshire and Leicestershire before taking up the white coat and becoming an umpire a profession that made him part of cricket folklore.
By the time he retired from International cricket in June 1996, he had stood at 66 Test matches and 69 One-Day Internationals and spent 40 years in cricket.
He was probably the most popular figure umpire in the game with players and fans alike.
He is also a popular and successsful speaker on the after dinner circuit with his homespun Yorkshire wit and wisdom.
