Born in Hong Kong in 1959, Dave’s family moved back to the UK when he was 18 months old. He attended Dollar Academy in Scotland, then after leaving school, Dave undertook a five year Short Service Commission in the Royal Marines, seeing active service during two tours of Northern Ireland and the Falklands conflict.
These duties meant that Dave’s rugby rather played second fiddle although he did captain the Commando Training Centre and won his Rugby Colours for the Royal Marines. He then spent five years as a Contract Officer in the Oman Army before joining the then Royal Hong Kong Police in 1988, with whom he served for 28 years. He first represented Hong Kong at rugby in 1989 and last played for a representative Hong Kong team against the Penguins in 2003. He played for Hong Kong a total of 55 times, which at time of writing is still a record.
Dave earned a reputation as a highly entertaining after dinner speaker in Hong Kong through speaking at rugby dinners, Robert Burn’s Nights and Trafalgar celebrations, recounting stories of his rugby, military and life experiences.
