David “Harry” Bassett had a playing career as a defensive midfielder at semi-professional level, playing for Hayes, Wycombe Wanderers, Walton & Hersham FC and later Wimbledon FC.
However he is probably best know for guiding Wimbledon FC to the top flight First Division in the 1980’s after taking over from Dario Gradi at Plough Lane in 1981. Considering the fact that Wimbledon had only been elected to the football League in 1977, it was an astounding achievement.
Dave, or “Harry”, as he is more commonly know is still one of football’s real characters with numerous stories that he tells on the after dinner circuit on a regular basis.
